Why SuperCamp Works So Well

SuperCamp uses a proprietary method of teaching and learning called Quantum Learning® that SuperCamp co-founder, Bobbi DePorter, and her elite team of educators have developed and refined over the last 30 years. These brain-based methods, which have evolved from accelerated learning principles, are designed to unlock a student’s full potential for learning and personal growth by: Creating an optimal learning environment Actively involving the whole person in every learning exercise Using physical activity, creativity, music, images, color, and other methods designed to actively engage students in their own learning

In addition, at SuperCamp everything happens for a reason. Unlike a lot of so-called summer study and academic programs that provide considerably more downtime than uptime, SuperCamp carefully orchestrates the entire day and evening. Campers do have their free time, but we make sure that learning and growth are taking place while the fun is happening.

The Prime Directive of SuperCamp

The SuperCamp experience rests on this concept: Theirs to Ours, Ours to Theirs. This premise reminds us of the importance of entering our campers’ world first. In order for us to teach, we must first build authentic bridges into your kids’ lives. This directive is something that separates SuperCamp from most other summer programs and most schools.

How do we do it? First, it helps that every summer we have an energetic group of talented, out-going and friendly staff. Second, as camp starts, we keep it light and fun. Third, with each new learning activity, we associate what we teach with an event, thought or feeling extracted from the campers’ home, social, athletic, musical, artistic, recreational or academic lives. Once this link has been established, then we can bring them into our world, and give them our understanding of the content.

The Five Tenets

The teaching of Quantum Learning at SuperCamp embodies five tenets, or resident truths. Similar to the prime directive, these tenets permeate every aspect of SuperCamp. The tenets are:

Everything Speaks: Everything from the SuperCamp physical environment to our Facilitators’ body language to the words and designs on our flip charts is sending a message about learning.

Everything is on Purpose: Everything that happens at SuperCamp under the orchestration of our camp leaders has an intended purpose… everything.

Experience Before Label: Students’ brains thrive on complex stimulation. It drives the need to know. Therefore, learning happens best when students experience the information before they acquire the labels for what they learned.

Acknowledge Every Effort: Learning involves risking, stepping out of what is comfortable. As our campers take these steps, they are acknowledged for both their competence and their confidence.

If It’s Worth Learning, It’s Worth Celebrating!: Celebration is the breakfast of champion learners. Celebration provides feedback regarding progress and increases positive emotional associations with the learning.
